Onyx is a form of Agate, which in turn is a form of Chalcedony, with straight parallel bands, used for making cameos.

FOLKLORE & LEGEND
Legend says that, one day, whilst Venus was sleeping, Cupid cut off her fingernails which scattered onto he ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the Gods turned the fingernails into the gem Onyx. Therefore, Onyx is known for its ability to encourage growth of the fingernails and hair.
In Greek times, all colours of Chalcedony where known as Onyx. The Romans then narrowed it down to only include black and brown. Nowadays we refer to it as Black Onyx to separate it from other colours.
Onyx is one of the zodiac gemstones for Leo.
Onyx is said to hold the memories of the wearer.
